Community groups, migrant advocates and local representatives have rallied in Melbourne’s south-east amid growing debate over migration, racism and social cohesion in Australia.

The “Unite Against Racism, Migrants Are Welcome” rally was held in Dandenong on August 16, bringing together people from migrant and refugee communities, faith groups, unions and community organisations. Participants marched from Dandenong Market to Harmony Square, calling for greater solidarity and rejecting the use of migrants as a target in political debates.

Dandenong is one of Australia’s most culturally diverse areas. More than 60% of residents in the City of Greater Dandenong were born overseas, according to the 2021 Census, while residents speak more than 150 languages at home.

The rally came as migration and housing affordability remain major national political issues. Australia’s population increased by over 500,000 people in the year to September 2025, with net overseas migration continuing to make a significant contribution to population growth.

Housing pressures have also intensified. Australia recorded more than 200,000 new dwelling completions in 2024–25, but demand for homes remains high as population growth continues and construction costs remain elevated.

Speakers at the Dandenong event argued that these pressures require policy responses focused on housing supply, affordability, wages and essential services rather than blaming particular communities.

The rally also followed recent student demonstrations opposing One Nation and Pauline Hanson’s positions on migration and multiculturalism.

For organisers, the message was broader than opposition to one political party: they said Australia’s multicultural communities should not be divided by race or religion as the country confronts economic and social pressures.

The events highlight how migration is increasingly becoming part of Australia’s wider debate over housing, population growth, cost of living and social cohesion.
