Batteries are widely seen as one of the key technologies that will help Australia transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. They store excess solar and wind power when it is abundant and release it when demand rises. But a recent episode in Western Australia shows that batteries alone cannot guarantee cheaper electricity.
According to an ABC News report, electricity prices in Western Australia surged dramatically around 1am on July 12, despite relatively ordinary demand and wind generation. The unexpected driver was battery charging. Four large batteries owned by state power provider Synergy increased their combined charging from 229 megawatts to 640MW, adding roughly a third to electricity demand at the time.
The result was striking: wholesale prices rose from around $120 per megawatt-hour to more than $350/MWh.
Energy analysts say the incident highlights an important challenge in managing battery storage. Batteries do not generate electricity; they shift electricity from one period to another. If large battery fleets charge simultaneously when the system is already under pressure, they can actually increase demand and push prices higher.
The episode has also raised questions about market regulation and how battery operators make charging and discharging decisions. Analysts argue that batteries now have significant influence over electricity prices in Western Australia and therefore require careful oversight.
This does not mean batteries are failing. In fact, they are already playing an important role in stabilising the grid and supporting the growth of renewable energy. The bigger lesson is that the transition to clean energy requires more than simply installing batteries and solar panels.
Technology can provide the tools, but good energy policy, market design and intelligent management determine whether those tools actually deliver affordable and reliable power.
Western Australia’s experience offers an important warning for countries around the world: the future of renewable energy will depend not only on what we build, but on how intelligently we operate it.
