A new mosque has opened in Young in regional New South Wales, reflecting the growth of the town’s Muslim community and the changing cultural landscape of regional Australia.
The mosque, located in the Riverina town of Young, is among the largest in regional Australia and can accommodate around 1,000 worshippers. The new facility is almost five times larger than the previous mosque, which was established as a makeshift facility in the 1990s.
Young has a population of around 11,000 people, and Muslims accounted for 4.4 per cent of the population in the 2021 Census. Local officials say the Muslim population may have increased significantly since then, with the local mayor estimating it could now represent around 10 per cent of the town.
The growth in Young is part of a wider pattern of religious and cultural diversity across Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 813,392 people identified as Muslim in the 2021 Census, representing 3.2 per cent of Australia’s population. Islam was the country’s third-largest religious affiliation after Catholicism and Anglicanism.
Community leaders say the new mosque is not only a place of worship but also an important community facility. Young has an Islamic school, and local authorities say the availability of religious and educational facilities has helped attract Muslim families to the region.
The mosque community includes people with Lebanese, Southeast Asian and Egyptian backgrounds. It has also developed community outreach initiatives, including free meals across the Hilltops region and opportunities for local residents to learn more about Islam.
The opening comes amid broader national discussions about multiculturalism, immigration and social cohesion. Community leaders in Young say the new facility represents the continuation of a community that has become an established part of regional Australian life.
With its larger capacity and community-focused role, the mosque marks a significant development for Young and highlights how Australia’s Muslim population is increasingly represented beyond the country’s major cities.
