The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has issued a fresh safety advisory after laboratory tests confirmed that several imported, unregistered melatonin products circulating in Australia are counterfeit and pose significant health risks.
According to the TGA, the tested products did not match their labelled melatonin content, with one sample containing over 400% more melatonin than indicated, while another had no melatonin at all. The agency warns that such inconsistencies could put consumers at serious risk, particularly children, who may face accidental overdose and possible hospitalisation.
Consumers are urged to avoid purchasing melatonin products from unverified overseas sources and to consult healthcare professionals for safe options. More details about the tested samples are available in the TGA’s summary report.
Melatonin products, including tablets, capsules, gummies, and liquids, are used to manage sleep-wake cycles, jet lag, and insomnia, typically in doses ranging from 1 to 10 mg.
