Internationally Renowned Architects to Design New Brisbane Stadium at Victoria Park
Brisbane, QLD A global architecture dream team has been appointed to design the new Brisbane Stadium at Victoria Park, which will serve as the centrepiece venue for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Australian-founded design powerhouses COX Architecture and Hassell Studio will partner with Japan’s Azusa Sekkei, a firm internationally recognised for its work on world-class sports facilities, including Tokyo’s Japan National Stadium for the 2020 Games.
The Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority (GIICA) selected the trio following a rigorous three-month procurement process that began with an open call for Expressions of Interest in September 2025. The design team will be supported by international engineering leaders Arup and sbp, both renowned for their expertise in stadium roof design.
According to GIICA, the concept for the new stadium represents a “Queensland Response”, integrating the venue into the landscape of Victoria Park and reflecting the relaxed, outdoor lifestyle that defines the Sunshine State.
The 63,000-seat stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics during the 2032 Games before becoming Brisbane’s main sporting venue in legacy mode home to the Brisbane Lions, Queensland Bulls, and Brisbane Heat.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure Catherine King said the appointment marks a major step forward in the city’s preparations for the Games.
“Inspired by the iconic Queenslander, this stadium will be a worthy home for the world’s best athletes, talented performers and excited spectators,” Minister King said. “It promises to become a landmark venue for the city, hosting global sporting events and international concerts well beyond 2032.”
Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Jarrod Bleijie said the new stadium design captures the state’s unique spirit.
“The team has developed a concept that celebrates the best of our Queensland lifestyle and character in a truly magnificent vision,” Mr Bleijie said. “This project will be a source of pride for generations to come.”
GIICA Chair Stephen Conry AM praised the architects’ combined expertise in delivering visionary and technically sophisticated venues.
“The track record of COX, Hassell and Azusa Sekkei made them an outstanding choice,” he said. “Their approach reflects both local identity and world-class design excellence.”
COX Architecture Director Richard Coulson emphasised that the project aims to create a stadium deeply embedded in its surroundings.
“We believe the stadium must be truly of its place, reflecting Brisbane’s identity and lifestyle,” Mr Coulson said. “Victoria Park’s rolling green hills and sweeping views will frame a venue that embodies Queensland’s connection to nature, shade, and open air.”
Hassell Managing Principal Lucy O’Driscoll added that the design will ensure long-term community value.
“This project goes beyond major events it’s about creating an adaptable venue that will serve Brisbane for decades,” she said. “It will deliver a world-class experience for both athletes and fans.”
The new Brisbane Stadium is one of 17 new and upgraded venues being delivered across Queensland under the $7.1 billion Games Venues Infrastructure Program, jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments.
Early design and project validation work are now underway to ensure the stadium’s timely completion ahead of the 2032 Games.
