A local advocacy organisation has unveiled a seven-point action plan aimed at addressing illegal rough sleeping and antisocial behaviour in Maryborough’s central business district.
Mary Inc, a community-based group, says the proposal is designed to improve public safety while supporting vulnerable individuals experiencing homelessness. The plan calls for tighter regulation of free tent distribution, revised approaches to public food handouts, and the introduction of a council-funded safety patrol to monitor activity in the CBD.
Group leaders argue that well-intentioned support initiatives, such as unrestricted tent and supply distribution, may be contributing to long-term rough sleeping in public areas. They say a more coordinated and structured response is needed to balance compassion with community safety.
Among the recommendations is the establishment of a multi-agency task force involving local council representatives, housing services, health providers, and law enforcement. Advocates believe a collaborative approach would allow for more effective support pathways while addressing concerns raised by business owners and residents.
The proposal comes amid growing debate in regional Queensland communities about how best to respond to homelessness and public safety issues. Local traders have reported concerns about antisocial behaviour, while support services have highlighted the complex social and economic factors contributing to homelessness.
Community leaders have emphasised that the goal is not to penalise vulnerable individuals, but to ensure that support systems are structured, sustainable, and responsive. They say long-term housing solutions, mental health services, and social assistance remain central to addressing the root causes of rough sleeping.
The plan is expected to be discussed further with council and state representatives in the coming weeks as stakeholders consider next steps.
